Arriving and Preparing
When you get to our office on the day of your surgery, you will check in at the front desk and they will take care of you from there. If you need to fill out any more paperwork, you will do this before going in for surgery. We recommend having this out of the way before your surgery date, however. You should also make sure to pick up any prescriptions prior to your surgery to be prepared for recovery.
Your doctor will prepare you for surgery by reiterating any risks, going over the procedure, and answering any questions. You will also have the option to take a mild oral sedative to help you relax during the procedure.
The Cataract Surgery Procedure
Before beginning your cataract surgery, you will lay down on a surgical chair and your eyes will be numbed using local anesthetic. Your doctor will gently prop open your eyes using a lid speculum.
To start the procedure, your cataract surgeon will create an incision in the cornea. Through this incision, your surgeon will perform a capsulotomy to gain access to the cataract. During a capsulotomy, the surgeon removes the front portion of the capsule (the thin membrane that encapsulates the natural lens). Next, your surgeon will break up the cataract using ultrasound technology. Once broken up, the cataract can be removed and replaced with an IOL. That’s it!
You should not feel any pain during your cataract surgery. You may feel some pressure and minor discomfort, but because your eyes are numbed there should not be pain. The recovery process is quick and requires little to no downtime.
